Chocolate Coconut "Milk" Shake

If you ask me chocolate is my favorite food group! I love real good quality dark and bitter sweet chocolate, and I have been known to bring back from trips loads of varieties of unique artisanal chocolates. It is not only delicious, it is also considered an art. To work with chocolate you have to be a master. It is a tricky ingredient to work with, and I have taken some culinary courses on chocolate, but I leave the art of chocolate to the masters. Now the art of consuming and tasting chocolate I can do that!

So getting into why chocolate is GREAT for us. Good quality 65 to 100% cacao should be consumed daily or at least 5 times a week. The more cacao and less sugar, so this means milk chocolate which has a lot of sugar, a piece of chocolate contains the better it is for us. Cacao contains rich polyphenols we should be consuming on a regular basis, like in the form of berries and a glass of red wine. Once we turn the chocolate into a candy bar or make milk chocolate out of it to reduce the bitterness we massively decrease the health benefits of this incredible ingredient. 1-3 oz serving daily will help to reduce your appetite, has been shown to reduce BMI levels, and it is a delicious treat that we can enjoy daily. 

Sometimes eating a piece of chocolate just doesn't do the trick to satisfy our sweet tooth. So give this recipe of a mock "milk" shake a try to really satisfy your chocolate cravings. It is a delicious and better for you alternative to a sugary smoothie or milkshake. 

 

Yields 2 servings (8 0z each) or 3-4 servings (4-6 oz each)

Ingredients:

2 cups Coconut milk - cold

1/2 cup 65% or 75% chocolate chips - melted 

1 1/2 ripe banana - frozen 

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 

1 tablespoon honey 

A pinch of salt 

Garnish:

Unsweetened coconut flakes 

Chia seeds 

Chocolate chips 

Method:

Melt the chocolate chips either over a double boiler or in the microwave which is quicker. 

To melt chocolate chips in the microwave, microwave in 30 second intervals. After each interval stir well with a spatula. It should only be a total of a minute, so 2 30 second intervals. Pour the melted chocolate into a liquid measuring cup, this will make it easier to pour into the blender. 

Blend together the frozen banana, honey, salt, cocoa powder, and coconut milk. 

With the blender on low/medium, slowly pour in the melted chocolate. This will help from the chocolate solidifying. 

Once all the chocolate is added, mix well and pour into glasses. 

Garnish as desired and serve.
